The AES Corporation, incorporated on January 28, 1981, is a holding company. The Company, through its subsidiaries, operates a diversified portfolio of electricity generation and distribution businesses. The Company is organized into four market-oriented strategic business units (SBUs): US and Utilities (United States, Puerto Rico and El Salvador); South America (Chile, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil); MCAC (Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean), and Eurasia (Europe and Asia). The Company has two lines of business: generation and utilities. US and Utilities SBU has approximately 30 generation facilities, two utilities in the United States, and over four utilities in El Salvador.
The Company’s generation business owns and/or operates power plants, which it uses to generate power for its customers, such as utilities, industrial users and other intermediaries. It provides various fuel technologies that are suited to the individual markets in which it operates. These fuel technologies include renewables, coal, diesel, gas and oil.
The Company’s utilities business owns and/or operates utilities to provide electricity to customers in the residential, commercial, industrial and governmental sectors within a local or regional service area. Its utilities also generate and sell electricity on the wholesale market.
